Clean and Green framework: Burkina Faso insights

The Clean and Green framework, piloted in Burkina Faso with WaterAid and Eau Vive International, aims to improve rural health and agricultural sustainability by managing a broad range of waste-related risks and recycling nutrients and water from household and community waste flows.

• The Clean and Green framework was developed to address the limitations of traditional rural sanitation interventions, which typically focus only on human excreta. To achieve significant health improvements, the framework advocates for reducing exposure to animal excreta and improving food hygiene and water management practices.
• The framework promotes the safe reuse of household and community waste flows containing water, organic matter, or nutrients to improve environmental sustainability and agricultural production amidst resource constraints and climate risks.
• The framework is currently being piloted in Burkina Faso through a collaboration between the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), WaterAid, and Eau Vive International (EVI), with future plans for an impact evaluation of the first pilot and adaptation for other contexts.
