Clean and Green framework: Burkina Faso insights

This discussion brief introduces the Clean and Green framework, a tool developed by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to manage waste-related risks and resources in Burkina Faso. The framework aims to expand sanitation and hygiene efforts beyond human excreta to include animal excreta, food hygiene, and water management, while promoting the safe reuse of nutrients and organic matter to improve agricultural production and environmental sustainability.

• The Clean and Green framework was developed by SEI to address a broader range of local contamination risks than traditional sanitation interventions, which typically focus on human excreta. The framework seeks to improve health by reducing exposure to animal excreta and improving water management and food hygiene, while simultaneously enhancing agricultural production and environmental sustainability by safely reusing waste flows containing water, organic matter, or nutrients.
• The Clean and Green framework is currently being piloted in Burkina Faso through a collaboration between SEI, WaterAid, and Eau Vive International (EVI). The implementation is supported by specific tools for diagnostics, monitoring, and awareness-raising, with future plans including an impact evaluation of the initial pilot and the adaptation of these tools for other contexts.
