Creative Approaches for Inclusive Transport in Africa

This guidance document, launched at COP27, provides concepts and creative participatory tools designed to increase the inclusion of disadvantaged groups in transport planning across Africa to improve climate resilience and safety.

• Low-income disadvantaged groups, including women, the young, the old, and disabled persons, are disproportionately affected by poor transport systems that fail to meet their needs, particularly due to a lack of investment in safe infrastructure and low priority for non-motorized transport (NMT).
• The lack of public transport, cycle paths, and sidewalks in African cities forces citizens to use motorized vehicles like cars, minibuses, motorbike taxis, and paratransit when affordable, leading to negative effects on road safety, traffic congestion, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and air quality.
• The guidance provides a set of creative participatory tools and concepts intended for transport planners, decision-makers, and representatives of disadvantaged groups to create transport systems in Africa that are both inclusive and resilient to the compounding impacts of climate change.
