Overcoming social barriers to learning and engagement with climate change adaptation: experiences with Swedish forestry stakeholders

This research paper examines how science-based learning experiences can address social barriers to climate change adaptation among Swedish forestry stakeholders, utilizing the theory of transformative learning and interviews with 24 participants.

• Social barriers that hinder climate change adaptation include the perception that climate change is not urgent or irrelevant, a lack of trust in climate science, and underestimates of adaptive capacity.
• Many forestry stakeholders found it difficult to form opinions because they viewed scientific knowledge as contested and uncertain.
• Engagement with climate change adaptation is more likely to increase when scientific knowledge is aligned with the aspirations, objectives, and needs of stakeholders, and is connected to their own experiences with extreme weather and climate change.
