Conserving biodiversity in Myanmar’s Upper Chindwin Basin

The project in Myanmar’s Upper Chindwin Basin aims to protect Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and support sustainable livelihoods. It addresses threats such as commercial mining, logging, and overfishing through the development of Community Action Plans (CAP) and the implementation of sustainable land and water management practices.

• The Upper Chindwin Basin contains critical biodiversity habitats known as Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and supports Critically Endangered and Endangered species, with many local households relying on nature-based activities for income.
• Research conducted by SEI in 2018 identified that commercial mining, logging, unsustainable farming, and overfishing are key threats to wetland habitats, leading to a rapid decline in fish catch, loss of wetland habitats, and shrinking populations of endangered aquatic species.
• The project will utilize biodiversity and ecosystem service assessments to create Community Action Plans (CAP) with local stakeholders, focusing on sustainable agricultural, land, and water management, including the establishment of conservation and restoration zones.
