Private actors in agricultural adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa: Publicly funded projects

This research paper analyzes the involvement of private actors in 64 agricultural adaptation projects in sub-Saharan Africa funded by international climate funds and Rwanda's Green Fund between 2010 and 2016.

• An analysis of 64 agricultural adaptation projects in sub-Saharan Africa approved by five international climate funds and Rwanda’s Green Fund (FONERWA) between 2010 and 2016 found that 39 projects, or 61%, included the private sector.
• Private sector engagement in these projects varied across three primary methods: using public finance to increase awareness of climate risks to encourage future investment, hiring private actors to provide goods and services via public finance, and using public finance to leverage existing private investment, though the latter occurred in a much smaller number of projects.
