Leveraging Agroforestry for Bioenergy Security

This policy brief examines the role of agroforestry in providing bioenergy for households and small-scale industries, emphasizing the need for sustainable sourcing and innovative energy conversion to ensure food and fuel security.

• Agroforestry serves as a critical source of bioenergy for small-scale industries and households, though its implementation is hindered by constraints related to labour, production, and markets.
• In rural Southeast Asia and Africa, traditional biomass-based energy is unlikely to be replaced by preferred modern energy sources in the short term, and global demand for sustainably sourced biomass is expected to rise as fossil fuel dependence decreases.
• Achieving bioenergy security through agroforestry requires the scaling of adaptable land tenure systems, efficient energy conversion, and mechanisms that mitigate climate and health risks. Specifically, biogas infrastructure, briquettes, and improved cookstoves enable the simultaneous production of fuel and food, while on-farm biomass production reduces environmental risks and drudgery compared to sourcing from woodlands or natural forests.
