Agroforestry and Youth

This policy brief from the Stockholm Environment Institute examines how agroforestry can support the livelihoods of young farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, addressing challenges such as unemployment, food insecurity, and climate change to prevent forced urban migration.

• Young smallholder farmers are especially vulnerable to global crises—including climate change, unemployment, and the COVID-19 pandemic—because they frequently lack capital, networks, and long-term access to land, which often forces them to migrate to urban areas.
• Agroforestry, defined as a farming technique integrating trees with crops and pasture, is presented as a tool to address the challenges faced by young rural farmers and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• To keep young people in rural areas and sustain their livelihoods, the agriculture sector needs to become more inclusive, address the specific needs of youth, and increase resilience to environmental and economic shocks. Agroforestry can facilitate this by increasing youth participation in rural development and food system decision-making.
