Decarbonizing road passenger transport and reaping health benefits in Indonesia

This policy brief summarizes a UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) assessment on reducing road transport emissions and improving public health in Indonesia through strategic policy pathways.

• Indonesia has the potential to decrease road transport emissions by up to 84% by 2050 and enhance public health by implementing a combination of technological advancements, policy changes, and shifts in travel behavior.
• A multifaceted decarbonization strategy for Indonesia should focus on three primary components: avoiding emissions by lowering travel demand, shifting from individual vehicles to public transport, and improving vehicle efficiency through the expansion of electric vehicles and the interim use of biofuels.
• To achieve these benefits and ensure accountability, Indonesia needs to enforce stronger policy measures, establish stricter fuel efficiency standards, provide incentives for clean infrastructure, improve travel behavior data collection, create a national emission-tracking system, and set local carbon-reduction targets.
