Global Methane Pledge Roadmap

• The Global Methane Pledge, signed by 149 countries and the European Union in 2021, targets a 30% reduction in global anthropogenic methane emissions by 2030 relative to 2020 levels, though it does not define specific contributions by country or sector.
• Analysis of 168 NDCs revealed 476 methane-focused mitigation actions targeting sectors and countries responsible for about 40% of global methane. While current implementation targets and timelines in these NDCs are insufficient to meet the Global Methane Pledge, achieving the maximum technical mitigation potential of all 476 actions could reduce global emissions by approximately 31%.
• There are opportunities to exceed the Global Methane Pledge goals through additional commitments to technical measures and behavioral changes, such as reducing waste generation and shifting diets.
