Cómo resolver el rompecabezas del uso de la tierra en Brasil

This research paper discusses the environmental cost of Brazil's agricultural expansion and proposes four coordinated strategies to increase production and social welfare while reducing deforestation.

• Since 2013, Brazil has produced approximately 30% of the world's soy and 15% of its meat, but this agricultural expansion has occurred at the expense of native ecosystems. Specifically, since 1985, nearly 65 million hectares of forests and savannas in the Legal Amazon have been replaced by cropland and pastures.
• The authors propose four strategies to mitigate deforestation while increasing production: 1) designating currently undesignated public forests as protected areas to stop land grabbing and speculation; 2) using Brazil's Forest Code mechanisms, such as environmental reserve quotas (CRA) and market initiatives, to reduce legal deforestation on private land; 3) investing in sustainable intensification technologies for medium and large properties to meet international demand without expanding into new areas; and 4) providing technical assistance to small farmers in the Amazon to improve livelihoods and reduce deforestation pressure.
