Emerging regional perspectives of global climate change scenarios

This research paper presents a systematic review of 155 studies to examine how global Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) are being reimagined and extended through regional lenses to improve their relevance for adaptation and vulnerability research.

• A systematic review of 155 studies on regional scenario development identifies five primary perspectives for regionalising the global Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP) narratives.
• While top-down methods are the most common, there is a rise in multigenerational regional scenario analyses and the use of participatory bottom-up approaches to improve cross-scale consistency.
• Historically, science-policy assessments for climate change have focused on emissions and mitigation, with less application in vulnerability or adaptation research; reframing global scenarios may increase engagement with scholars in these fields outside of high-income countries.
