Climate Finance and Mitigation Ambitions of Recipient Countries

This research paper empirically examines whether increased international public climate finance leads to higher climate mitigation ambitions in developing countries, using data from 2015-2020.

• The study found that international public climate finance has a positive but statistically insignificant effect on the mitigation ambitions of recipient countries. This effect varied by country type, appearing higher for least developed countries and weaker for small island developing states.
• Developing countries view the fulfillment of their emission reduction pledges under the Paris Agreement as being conditional upon the receipt of climate finance.
• The research utilized climate finance data spanning the years 2015 to 2020, which was obtained from Aid Atlas.
