Citizen Food Assembly

This case study examines the York Citizen Food Assembly held in November 2019, exploring the role of citizen participation in food system policy making to address complex challenges through authentic engagement.

• The York Citizen Food Assembly focused on local food initiatives in Yorkshire aimed at tackling food waste and relocalising food production and supply. This included 'food hubs', which are community-based business models that increase food supply diversity, especially within disadvantaged communities.
• The assembly identified that involving local stakeholders in the planning process aids the design and sortation of the assembly. Additionally, it highlighted that public procurement at the city level could be used to drive more sustainable food sourcing within the region.
• Participation in the assembly served to galvanize individual agency, leading participants to proactively look for ways to create environmental and prosocial change within the food system.
