Climate Change Vulnerability and Migration

This report by the Stockholm Environment Institute examines how climate change, poverty, and marginalization drive labour migration and affect children in Southeast Asia, specifically focusing on those who migrate or are left behind.

• The report analyzes the intersection of climate change, poverty, and injustice through 92 personal stories and interviews with children, returned migrants, parents, grandparents, and local leaders in six villages across Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam.
• Southeast Asia is characterized by high exposure to natural hazards such as cyclones, floods, and torrential rains, which are being intensified by climate change. Additional climate pressures include sea-level rise, extreme heat, droughts, and unreliable rainfall, all of which threaten livelihoods and well-being.
• As of 2020, the UN estimated there were approximately 10.6 million international migrants in Southeast Asia, with Thailand hosting the largest number. Of these migrants, about 1.27 million were under the age of 18.
