Climate Change Vulnerability and Migration

The report examines how climate change and socio-economic factors drive labour migration and affect children in Southeast Asia, specifically in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam. Based on 92 personal stories and expert interviews, it aims to inform policies and interventions by World Vision and other partners to ensure safe and dignified migration that protects the rights and well-being of vulnerable young people in a region highly exposed to natural hazards.

• The study utilizes 92 personal stories from pre-adolescents, teenagers, returned migrants, parents, and grandparents across six villages in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam to analyze the intersection of climate change, poverty, and injustice.
• Southeast Asia is characterized by a young population, with nearly 27% under 15 years of age in 2022 and 16% aged 15–24, and hosted approximately 10.6 million international migrants as of 2020, including about 1.27 million children under 18.
• Climate change is intensifying natural hazards in Southeast Asia, such as cyclones, floods, sea-level rise, extreme heat, and droughts, which in turn jeopardize livelihoods and increase vulnerability for those attempting to adapt or migrate.
