Urban Opportunity in the Climate Crisis

This report, led by the Coalition for Urban Transitions and 36 partner organizations, argues that urban centers are critical for climate leadership and economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically focusing on six emerging economies.

• Urban centers are central to global economic and demographic activity, representing 80% of global GDP and 56% of the global population, making them essential for advancing resiliency, supporting jobs, and uplifting marginalized communities.
• Cities serve as laboratories for policymakers to pilot social, energy, and transportation programs that can subsequently be scaled up at a national level to meet climate and development objectives, particularly during the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
• The study focuses on six emerging economies—Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and South Africa—to propose strategies for national leaders, urban leaders, and the private sector to create climate-resilient and inclusive futures.
