Climate, Ocean and Security Challenges

This report summarizes a November 2020 virtual event organized by the Stockholm Climate Security Hub, which convened Northern European scientists and decision-makers to discuss the security challenges posed by climate change's impact on the world's oceans.

• Climate change is creating significant risks for the world's oceans, marine life, and coastal communities, with future sea-level rises expected to cause severe suffering that disproportionately affects poorer, rural coastal areas.
• Rising sea levels and the destruction of homes and livelihoods are creating human security challenges that escalate into broader state and collective security issues, particularly for small island states and the 70% of climate-vulnerable countries that are also politically fragile.
• The dialogue focused on the intersection of sea-level rise, warmer temperatures, coastal landscape degradation, and the resulting impacts on resource security and marine territorial boundaries.
