Climate immobility justice under transboundary hydropower: evidence from Northeast Thailand

This research paper examines how transboundary hydropower development on the Mekong River creates injustices that affect the mobility and immobility of downstream communities in Northeast Thailand, using Nancy Fraser's three-dimensional justice framework to analyze economic, cultural, and political drivers.

• Transboundary hydropower development in the Mekong River produces climate (im)mobility injustice through three interconnected processes: the economic destabilisation of river-based livelihoods which limits mobility capacities; the erosion of place-based attachments and situated ecological knowledge that support the desire to stay; and political exclusions that prevent downstream Thai communities from being recognized as affected parties, thereby blocking claims-making processes.
