The effect of forest owner decision-making, climatic change and societal demands on land use change and ecosystem service provision in Sweden

The article introduces CRAFTY-Sweden, an agent-based model used to simulate the Swedish forestry sector from 2010 to 2100. Findings indicate that landowner behavior and socio-economic factors are more influential than climatic change in driving land-use change. The model predicts increased timber harvesting and a decoupling of supply and demand for forest ecosystem services.

• The CRAFTY-Sweden agent-based model simulations suggest that socio-economic changes and differences in landowner behavior may have a greater influence on land-use change and ecosystem service provision than the effects of climatic change on land productivities.
• Simulations indicate a significant increase in timber harvesting in the coming decades and a substantial decoupling between the supply and demand for forest ecosystem services, suggesting difficulties in meeting these demands over long durations.
