Climate change communication and adaptation among forest owners in Sweden

This research paper evaluates the impact of climate communication projects conducted by the Swedish Forest Agency on the risk perceptions and adaptation intentions of Swedish forest owners, comparing a participant group (1,493 individuals) with a randomly sampled control group (909 individuals).

• Climate communication projects led to statistically significant differences between participants and a control group regarding their awareness and concern about climate change, their belief in the urgency of taking action, and their intentions to implement adaptive measures. The communication primarily influenced subjective risk perceptions and beliefs regarding knowledge and ability, increasing the likelihood of future adaptive action.
• Experience with extreme weather events influences an individual's intention to take adaptive measures regardless of whether they believe those extreme events were caused by climate change.
• The study emphasizes that communication practices and research must account for the hindering effects of economic rationales and social norms on individual adaptation efforts.
