Climate change communication and adaptation among forest owners in Sweden

The research compares Swedish forest owners who participated in Swedish Forest Agency communication projects against a randomly sampled control group to evaluate how such communication influences climate change awareness and the likelihood of taking adaptive actions.

• Forest owners who participated in climate communication projects showed statistically significant differences compared to a control group regarding their awareness of climate change, level of concern, belief in the urgency to act, and intentions to implement adaptive measures.
• The primary impact of the communication projects was on the subjective risk perceptions of forest owners and their beliefs in their own knowledge and ability, which increases the probability of future adaptive action.
• Personal experience with extreme weather events influences intentions to adapt independently of whether the individual believes those events were caused by climate change.
• Social norms and economic rationales can act as impediments to individual adaptation, suggesting a need for communication research and practice to address these factors.
