Effects

The Effects screen in LEAP allows users to view, edit, and add data for 258 default environmental effects, including greenhouse gases and local air pollutants. The software integrates GWP values from IPCC Assessment Reports (AR1 through AR6), enabling users to calculate emissions in physical tonnes or CO2 equivalents. While the main system focuses on effects directly associated with energy use, the Impact Benefits Calculator (IBC) module can be used for indirect health and air quality impacts at a national scale.

• LEAP provides a default dataset of 258 environmental effects, which includes all gases listed in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5 2013). These effects are categorized into major greenhouse gases (GHGs), local air pollutants, and other impacts such as solid waste, land degradation, and various chemical groups like hydrofluorocarbons and halons.
• The software's primary calculations are limited to environmental effects directly linked to energy use, although the Impact Benefits Calculator (IBC) module can assess indirect health impacts and air pollution concentrations for national-scale models.
• Users can apply GWP values from IPCC Assessment Reports AR1 through AR6. For AR5, users can choose between values that include or exclude climate carbon feedbacks. These GWP values, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of pollutant (T CO2e/T), can be manually edited or overridden within specific scenarios for sensitivity calculations.
• For AR5 and AR6, the Effects screen provides additional climate metrics for informational purposes, including Absolute Global Warming Potential (AGWP), Global Temperature Potential (GTP), Absolute Global Temperature Potential (AGTP), radiative efficiency, and effect lifetime. However, these metrics are not used in LEAP's active calculations, which only output results in physical tonnes or overall GWP.
