Estimating greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel consumption: two approaches compared

This research paper compares two methodologies for estimating national-level greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector, specifically analyzing CO2 emissions for 1988 and the additional heating effects of other combustion gases.

• A comparison of 1988 CO2 emission estimates shows that while the new results are within 2% of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's world total, there are discrepancies of more than 10% for 52 out of the 139 countries analyzed. These variations are attributed to differences in energy statistics, the treatment of non-energy products, and the treatment of bunker fuels.
