Policy Pathways towards Achieving a Zero Carbon Transport Sector in the UK in 2050

The paper evaluates pathways to decarbonise the UK transport sector by 2050, finding that while road and rail can reach zero CO2 emissions, aviation and shipping remain significant barriers.

• A 'maximum impact' (MI) scenario for 2050 results in a 76 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions for the entire UK transport sector, including international aviation and shipping, when compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario.
• The UK transport sector falls short of a zero carbon target by 2050 because emissions from aviation and shipping are more difficult to eliminate, achieving reductions of only 56 per cent and 49 per cent respectively in the MI scenario.
• While aviation and shipping are problematic, the analysis indicates that both road and rail transport are capable of reaching the zero CO2 emission target by 2050.
