Unifying explanation for variation in ozone sensitivity among woody plants
Summary
This research paper investigates the relationship between leaf morphology and ozone sensitivity in woody plants, finding that leaf dry mass per unit leaf area (LMA) explains much of the variation in ozone tolerance and biomass reduction.
Key insights
- The study found that ozone tolerance at the leaf level is closely associated with leaf dry mass per unit leaf area (LMA). Additionally, reductions in whole-tree biomass showed a stronger correlation with stomatal flux per unit leaf mass (r2 = 0.56) compared to stomatal flux per unit leaf area (r2 = 0.42).
- Using a mass-based index significantly reduced the interspecific variation in the slopes of ozone flux-response relationships (CV = 36%) compared to a leaf area basis (CV = 66%), leading to a convergence in the relationships for needle-leaf and broadleaf species.
- The authors conclude that considering LMA, a well-known and easily measured leaf trait, can explain much of the variation in ozone sensitivity among woody plants and improve large-scale ozone impact assessments.
