• The sustainable development benefits claimed by bioenergy projects vary as significantly across different project types as they do across all other types of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.
• Among the bioenergy projects analyzed, those utilizing agricultural farm residues report the highest number of sustainable development benefits, whereas projects relying on industrial forest residues report the lowest.
• To better guide international mitigation finance and CDM reform, there is a need for improved sustainability assessments of biomass energy projects, specifically through mandatory ongoing monitoring of benefits and post-implementation evaluations on the ground.
