Bioenergy projects and sustainable development: which project types offer the greatest benefits?

This research paper evaluates the sustainable development benefits of 77 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) bioenergy projects across India, Brazil, and sub-Saharan Africa, finding that projects utilizing agricultural farm residues claim the most benefits, while those using industrial forest residues claim the fewest.

• The study applied a methodology to evaluate sustainable development benefits across five bioenergy project types by analyzing design documents from 77 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects located in India, Brazil, and sub-Saharan Africa.
• There is significant variation in the claimed sustainable development benefits among different bioenergy project types. Specifically, projects based on agricultural farm residues claim the highest number of benefits, whereas projects based on industrial forest residues claim the lowest.
• The author argues that to better guide CDM reform and international mitigation finance priority-setting, there is a need for improved sustainability assessments that include on-the-ground post-implementation evaluations and mandatory ongoing monitoring of sustainable development benefits.
