One Health approach to WASH, zoonotic disease, health and wellbeing

This research paper examines the integration of One Health and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) frameworks to address zoonotic diseases and broader systemic challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

• There is a growing recognition that animal faeces contribute to the global burden of zoonotic and diarrheal diseases, leading to a re-evaluation of WASH interventions. However, current efforts are limited because they primarily focus on animal faeces in household environments and overlook other contamination risks, such as animal handling.
• A comprehensive One Health–WASH approach can extend beyond risk reduction to promote health, equity, and climate resilience. This framework can address multiple interconnected issues in low- and middle-income countries, including agricultural livelihoods, food insecurity, animal welfare, and ecosystem degradation caused by excessive nutrients in excreta.
