Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2019

The Energy Progress Report 2019, a joint publication by five custodian agencies, tracks global progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7). While the world is making progress in electricity access, renewable energy adoption, and energy efficiency, the report concludes that current ambition levels are insufficient to meet 2030 targets. Significant gaps remain in clean cooking access and electricity availability, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

• Global electricity access increased from 83% in 2010 to 89% in 2017, meaning more than 920 million people gained access. However, approximately 840 million people still lacked electricity in 2017, with the deficit increasingly concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa.
• Sub-Saharan Africa has the most severe electricity access deficit, with 573 million people lacking access. In 2017, Burundi, Chad, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Niger had the lowest electrification rates globally.
