The power of passive cooling solutions in Bangladesh and Indonesia

Key insights
- In the Kerail slum of Bangladesh, the application of cool roofs consisting of reflective paint led to a peak surface temperature decline of 12.3°C in one building and a peak indoor air temperature reduction of 7.72°C. On average, indoor temperatures were reduced by 3.5°C compared to levels before the coating was applied.
- In Jakarta, Indonesia, cool roofs applied to low-cost housing reduced indoor air temperatures relative to the outdoors by 2°C for clay tile roofs and 2.9°C for asbestos roofs during warm days with temperatures of 34°C or higher.
- A 5,200m² cool roof installed on an industrial building in Indonesia reduced indoor air temperatures from 40.8°C to 30.4°C when outdoor noon-time temperatures were approximately 34°C, resulting in a temperature reduction of 10.4°C for 500 shift workers.
- Beneficiary surveys in Indonesia showed that 100 percent of participants found the cool roof helpful or very helpful. While 94 percent of beneficiaries described temperatures as hot or very hot before application, 100 percent reported feeling neutral, cool, or cold afterward.
