Opening Doors: Mapping the Landscape for Sustainable Energy, Gender Diversity and Social Inclusion

The report analyzes data from 174 organizations and programs to identify gaps and challenges in integrating gender diversity and social inclusion into sustainable energy. It finds that marginalized groups lack decision-making power and that initiatives face significant hurdles, including funding shortages and low awareness of the need for inclusive energy service design.

• Marginalized groups, including women, girls, ethnic minorities, indigenous people, people with disabilities, and migrants, lack autonomy and decision-making power in sustainable energy, ranging from basic access in emerging economies to executive representation in energy companies. In 2016, women accounted for 23 percent of national decision-makers and 40 percent of the global labor force.
• The report identifies 174 organizations, programs, and policy instruments working at the intersection of sustainable energy, climate change, and social inclusion. These initiatives are primarily concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa (35 percent), South Asia (18 percent), Latin America and the Caribbean (15 percent), and East Asia and the Pacific (11 percent).
• Stakeholders attempting to provide clean and rapid energy services face three primary challenges: a shortage of funding (particularly multi-year funding), low awareness regarding the integration of climate change and social inclusion in energy service design, and a deficiency of policy instruments addressing these issues.
