Opening Doors: Mapping the Landscape for Sustainable Energy, Gender Diversity and Social Inclusion

This report maps the landscape of gender diversity and social inclusion within the sustainable energy and climate change sectors, analyzing data from 174 organizations and programs to identify systemic barriers and geographic distributions of initiatives.

• Marginalized groups, including women, girls, ethnic minorities, indigenous people, people with disabilities, and migrants, face a lack of autonomy, authority, and decision-making power regarding sustainable energy, ranging from basic access in emerging economies to executive representation in energy companies. In 2016, women accounted for 23 percent of national decision-makers and 40 percent of the global labor force.
• An analysis of 174 organizations, programs, and policy instruments shows that most activities are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa (35 percent), followed by South Asia (18 percent), Latin America and the Caribbean (15 percent), and East Asia and the Pacific (11 percent). These activities span energy financing, policy, renewable energy production and distribution, and capacity building.
• Stakeholders working to provide clean energy services face three primary challenges: a shortage of funding (particularly multi-year funding), low awareness regarding the necessity of integrating climate change, gender, and social inclusion into energy service design, and a deficiency in policy instruments that address these combined issues.
