ZIMBABWE APRM POPULAR SENSITISATION (ZAPS) PROJECT

This report details a pre-planning meeting held on 29 January 2021 for the Zimbabwe APRM Popular Sensitisation (ZAPS) Project. The project, led by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the SIVIO Institute, aims to increase civil society participation in Zimbabwe's African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) process following the country's accession in February 2020.

• The ZAPS Project is a collaboration between the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the SIVIO Institute, a Zimbabwean civil society organisation. Its primary goal is to increase civil society participation in Zimbabwe's APRM process, which is a requirement of the mechanism's rules.
• The project will support the creation of an APRM CSO Working Group tasked with selecting 10-12 critical governance issues in Zimbabwe. This group will produce an evidence-based 'spotlight report' to be shared with the public, the APRM Secretariat, and the Zimbabwean government.
• The ZAPS Project is designed to provide several strategic benefits: it allows civil society to influence government priorities during the early stages of APRM accession, encourages CSOs to speak with a unified voice rather than in isolation, and serves as a tool for civic education.
• The project is planned as a 6-month initiative ending in mid-2021. Following the 29 January 2021 pre-planning meeting, the schedule included a Sensitisation Workshop provisionally set for 26 February 2021 and a Working Group Meeting provisionally set for 29 March 2021.
