MARINE AND COASTAL ECOSYSTEM-BASED ADAPTATION (EbA) FOR ENHANCED RESILIENCE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

This fact sheet describes a research project by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), in partnership with the Southern Africa Trust and DFID, aimed at enhancing climate resilience in Southern Africa through the integration of marine and coastal Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) into national climate responses.

• Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) utilizes biodiversity and ecosystem services to assist people in adapting to climate change by managing ecosystems to maintain or improve the quality and quantity of services provided to society. This approach aims to support sustainable development, strengthen livelihoods to reduce poverty, and decrease environmental degradation.
• While there is significant potential for EbA expansion in Africa, success depends on overcoming barriers related to capacity building, access to finance, regional cooperation, policy alignment and development, and partnerships with marginalized groupings and coastal communities.
