• Liberation parties have maintained power by merging state and party activities, expanding executive authority over parliaments, dominating the media, and controlling financial resources through state capture.
• Opposition politicians face severe structural isolation because supporting them risks losing government contracts for businesses, advertising for newspapers, and diplomatic favor for donors.
• The opposition is further weakened by an inability to attract young talent, who instead seek security in government service, the corporate sector, or emigrate as part of a diaspora.
