Cultivating Smallholder Inclusion in Southern Africa's Macadamia Nut Value Chains

This research paper examines the development of the macadamia nut value chain in Southern Africa, specifically focusing on South Africa, Mozambique, and Malawi, and explores strategies for integrating smallholder producers into the industry.

• South Africa became the world's leading producer of macadamia nuts in 2011, 2013, and 2015, surpassing Australia. The sector overall represents 1% of global tree production.
• In Malawi, the macadamia nut sector remains a niche market dominated by commercial enterprises and a few large players. Growth is hindered by challenges regarding irrigation and access to new systems and technology, necessitating technical support and extension services to help smallholders scale into commercial production and reduce reliance on donor-driven projects.
• The macadamia nut industry in Mozambique is underdeveloped due to a lack of knowledge dissemination, leaving many smallholder farmers unaware of the crop's high export value. While Mozambique possesses four times the available arable land of South Africa, only 10% of that land is currently in production.
• South Africa is identified as the most suitable partner for adding value to a regional value chain because of its geographical clustering, established companies, technical skills, industrialization, and access to R&D and supply services. Additionally, Mozambique's port infrastructure is noted as a key contributor for a regional value chain involving Malawi.
• To establish global leadership, African producers should utilize information sharing platforms, study groups, and research-sharing. The paper suggests creating a regional industry body to coordinate a common agenda among SADC macadamia nut producers and exploring local markets for industrialized macadamia products to improve economies of scale.
