Plotting the decline of a tyrant - SAIIA

• The regime has attempted to maintain the loyalty of security forces through massive pension payouts, the distribution of seized farms, and wealth acquired from military intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
• External military threats are absent, and while the US and European Union have imposed sanctions, the author suggests these will not have a significant effect on the ruling bloc in the short to medium term.
• The internal opposition, specifically the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has failed to effectively challenge the regime despite its support in cities and Matabeleland, as it has not mobilized mass action or pursued armed struggle.
