Joint Statement on Commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement

A joint statement by representatives from various international think tanks and academic institutions expressing unwavering commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development following the announcement of the United States' withdrawal.

• The announcement by U.S. President Trump to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement means the USA will no longer participate in international efforts to limit global temperature rise to a maximum of 2.0 degrees, an action that isolates the USA internationally.
• The withdrawal of the USA is viewed as potentially fatal if other heads of state follow, and it is noted that the USA itself will suffer because the turbine sector, which depends on climate-friendly energy investment, was the industry that created the most jobs in the USA in 2017.
• Climate protection and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda are described as essential for securing jobs, sustainable economic development, poverty reduction, and enduring prosperity, particularly for low-income people in industrial countries and marginalised groups in developing countries.
• In response to the U.S. withdrawal, the statement calls for Germany, the European Union, and middle-income countries in the South to intensify efforts to implement the Paris Accord, strengthen collaborative programs, and create new international climate alliances.
• Despite the federal U.S. position, many of the 194 member states of the Framework Convention on Climate Change remain dedicated to the objectives, and numerous sub-national and non-state actors within the USA have dissociated themselves from the withdrawal announcement.
