Conservation finance options to support African post-2020 biodiversity priorities

This report discusses the necessity of integrating conservation finance into broader economic recovery and climate goals to address the rapid degradation of Africa's natural resources.

• Africa's natural resource base is experiencing a rapid negative transformation driven by population growth, urbanisation, the extractives sector, and agricultural and land/water use.
• Stakeholders emphasize two critical financing priorities for the 'Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Agenda': the mobilization of resources for new targets and the elimination of perverse subsidies that drive ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss.
• To ensure nature-positive investments, conservation and restoration targets should be linked to international climate change mitigation and adaptation goals via nature-based solutions (NbS). Additionally, 'green' finance mechanisms, such as debt-for-nature swaps, should be integrated into international stimulus financing for African countries following the COVID-19 pandemic.
