Towards an African Adaptation Finance Agenda for COP27

This report outlines the objectives of a community of practice on African climate finance, convened by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB), to identify adaptation finance priorities for the COP27 conference in Egypt.

• Africa is facing unprecedented climate impacts, including severe droughts in the Horn of Africa, the worst flooding in over 50 years in Nigeria, and devastating floods in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province in 2022 that caused more than 450 deaths.
• Adaptation is a primary priority for African climate negotiators and is reflected in the Nationally Determined Contributions of African countries and the African Union (AU) Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy and Action Plan adopted in February 2022.
• A community of practice consisting of diverse African climate stakeholders met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 13-14 September 2022 to identify adaptation finance priorities to support the regional climate agenda at COP27, hosted by Egypt from 6-18 November 2022.
