Turning Around the Power Distribution Sector

This report provides a compendium of pathways for electricity distribution companies (discoms) in India to improve financial and operational performance and increase the adoption of clean energy technologies. It argues that systemic reforms across policy, management, and technology are necessary to overcome significant annual losses that currently hinder grid modernization and the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

• India has transitioned from a power-deficit to a power-surplus nation and achieved universal village electrification, driven by significant growth in renewable energy. However, the sector now faces challenges regarding decarbonization, renewable energy integration, and the quality of access.
