The Carbon-Free Regions Handbook: Land Use

The Carbon-Free Regions Handbook: Land Use is a guide by RMI that provides four specific actions for subnational governments to address climate goals through land management, open space conservation, methane capture, and regenerative agriculture.

• Agriculture, forestry, and other land use account for approximately 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but the sector has the potential to offset this impact by 20% through carbon removal from the atmosphere.
• Land use strategies are most effective when implemented at the regional, provincial, or state government level because cities often overlook rural impacts and land use issues frequently cross subnational jurisdictional boundaries.
• The handbook recommends four primary actions for land use: promoting sustainable management of high-carbon landscapes (such as peatlands and mangroves) and enforcing anti-deforestation laws; preserving open spaces and forests through local ordinances and land acquisition; capturing methane from livestock waste via financial incentives and biogas infrastructure; and supporting the transition to regenerative agriculture through education and incentives.
