Asia-Pacific’s Green Steel Demand Opportunity

This report by RMI analyzes the demand for near-zero emissions steel in seven East and Southeast Asian countries by 2030, identifying a significant gap between projected demand and the current supply pipeline.

• By 2030, total steel demand in the analyzed Asia-Pacific (APAC) countries is expected to reach 241 million tons per annum (Mtpa). Private sector demand for near-zero emissions steel is estimated at 6.1 million tons (Mt), consisting of 80% ore-based and 20% scrap-based steel, a volume that could be satisfied by three to four greenfield plants.
• Public steel demand in the focus countries is estimated at 38.2 million tons per annum (Mtpa). If public procurement is aligned with 2030 climate targets, governments could generate an additional 11.5 Mt of demand for near-zero emissions steel.
• There is a projected supply gap for clean steel by 2030, as the current pipeline of 2.5 Mt is insufficient to meet the projected demand of 6.1 Mt (and potentially up to 17.6 Mt). This gap presents opportunities for new projects and the import of green iron from cost-competitive regions such as Australia.
