US City Stimulus Response

This report by RMI argues that US cities require immediate federal aid to manage the impacts of COVID-19 and subsequent strategic stimulus investments to transition toward a green economy.

• US cities are facing simultaneous crises including public health challenges, social unrest, rising unemployment, a potential housing crisis, and budgetary deficits caused by revenue losses from the economic downturn, necessitating a large amount of flexible federal aid to prevent staffing cuts.
• RMI proposes five strategic green stimulus areas for Congressional consideration to facilitate city recovery: streamlining cleantech permitting through automation and virtual inspections; developing electric, efficient, affordable housing and rehabilitating abandoned properties to create more jobs than fossil fuel investments; supporting public transit and active transportation for safer mobility and less pollution; investing in resilience for critical infrastructure and communities; and greening urban spaces to mitigate pollutants and create low-barrier jobs.
