Fast Tracking Freight in India: A Roadmap for Clean and Cost-effective Goods Transport

A report by NITI Aayog and RMI outlining a roadmap to make India's freight transport more cost-effective and cleaner through rail expansion, truck optimization, and zero-emissions vehicles.

• India's freight transport demand has grown at a rate of 5 percent since 2015 and is projected to continue growing rapidly for the next 30 years. This growth is associated with negative impacts including high logistics costs, increased CO2 emissions, and degraded air quality affecting public health.
• The report identifies three primary opportunity areas to mitigate negative impacts: increasing the share of rail freight, optimizing the use of trucks, and adopting fuel economy improvement technologies and zero-emissions vehicles.
• Implementing these opportunities could result in 10 gigatons of cumulative CO2 emission savings from 2020 to 2050. Additionally, it could help lower logistics costs from 14 percent of GDP to 10 percent and reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions by 28 percent and 35 percent, respectively, by 2050.
