Massachusetts Carbon Dioxide Removal Study

The Massachusetts Carbon Dioxide Removal Study, conducted by RMI for the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), evaluates 23 carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and storage pathways to determine their feasibility and scalability within the state's policy and economic context to support its Net Zero 2050 mandate.

• Massachusetts will likely require 14 million tCO2e of removals per year by 2050. While many CDR pathways may be suitable for deployment by midcentury, it is unlikely that deployment exclusively within the state can meet this total need.
• The study identifies seven pathways across synthetic, geochemical, and biogenic CDR, as well as storage, where Massachusetts could potentially lead in research and development (R&D) and innovation.
• To achieve the Net Zero 2050 mandate, Massachusetts will likely need to combine internal CDR efforts with out-of-state procurement, regional coordination, and further emissions reductions.
