La COP26, moment de vérité pour la Powering Past Coal Alliance

Reclaim Finance asserts that the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) has failed to translate its membership growth into a real coal phase-out. The organization highlights that most financial members continue to fund coal, and several member states, including Canada and the UK, are pursuing new coal projects or exports. It calls for a reform of PPCA principles to include mines and infrastructure and demands that financial institutions adopt policies based on the Coal Policy Tool to meet Paris Agreement timelines.

• Despite growing from 23 members in 2017 to 111 in March 2021, the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) has not achieved a real movement toward exiting coal. Only 2 of the 23 financial actors in the alliance have policies for a coal phase-out aligned with Paris Agreement deadlines (2030 for EU/OECD and 2040 globally). Financial members of the PPCA are estimated to have $38 billion invested in companies on the Global Coal Exit List.
• Several member states of the PPCA are acting contrary to the goal of a coal phase-out: Canada is increasing coal exports and planning 13 new mines in Alberta and British Columbia; the United Kingdom is considering a new coal mine; Mexico plans new coal-fired power plants; and Germany intends to continue using coal plants until 2038.
