A Roadmap for the Power Supply Sector in Argentina

This report synthesizes the results of the "Ambition to Action" (A2A) project, which provided analytical support to Argentina's energy supply sector and NDC process from March 2017 to December 2019. It focuses on scenario analysis for long-term temperature goals, the socio-economic impacts of the energy transition, and the technical challenges of integrating renewable energy into the power grid.

• The long-term temperature goals of the Paris Agreement have not been sufficiently addressed in Argentina's power sector modelling or dialogue processes. Better consideration of these goals is required to guide investments and reduce the risks of stranded assets and carbon lock-in.
• The transition to renewable energy offers Argentina the potential for regional and global leadership in the commercialization and development of synthetic fuels and renewables-based hydrogen. While the renewable sector can provide higher quality, future-proof jobs, policy interventions are needed to support communities currently dependent on fossil-based industries to ensure a just transition.
• The RenovAR auction scheme and the new Renewable Energy Law have increased renewable energy participation in the system. However, grid limitations currently represent the primary short-term obstacle to further increasing renewable energy shares, although existing hydro resources and established global practices may ease the integration of smaller shares of variable renewables (vRES).
