States, cities and businesses leading the way: a first look at decentralized climate commitments in the US

A report by the NewClimate Institute and The Climate Group analyzing decentralized climate commitments in the US, finding that 342 commitments could enable the US to meet half of its Paris Agreement goals by 2025.

• The United States could achieve 50% of its Paris Agreement climate commitments by 2025 if 342 analyzed commitments are implemented.
• US states are responsible for more than two-thirds of the total estimated emissions reductions, with New York, California, and Colorado providing the largest contributions due to their size and leadership.
• Cities and businesses show high levels of ambition: cities have an average greenhouse gas reduction target of 22% between 2015 and 2025, while businesses have the steepest targets, aiming for a 25% reduction over the next ten years.
