Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor 2025: Automotive Sector

This chapter of the 2025 Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor evaluates the climate strategies of five major light-duty vehicle manufacturers—Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Toyota, and Volkswagen—finding that most have failed to set credible decarbonisation targets or address critical sectoral transitions necessary for a 1.5°C-compatible pathway.

• Most assessed automotive companies lack ambition and integrity in their emission reduction targets. Except for Stellantis, none of the manufacturers have meaningfully increased the ambition of their targets, and most long-term carbon neutrality pledges lack credible details regarding the phase-out of internal combustion engines or measurable emissions reductions.
• Current battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales trends from the last five years suggest that 2030 sales targets are at risk and are not aligned with a 1.5°C pathway.
• Critical supply chain transitions are largely neglected. While General Motors and Ford have made initial commitments to procure near-zero aluminium and steel, strategies generally fail to address EV efficiency and emissions from battery production.
