Climate Action Tracker Global Update: Some progress since Paris but not enough

A briefing by the Climate Action Tracker (CAT) stating that current Paris Agreement commitments and real-world policies are insufficient to meet the 1.5°C warming limit, with projected warming levels of 3.0°C and 3.3°C respectively.

• The Climate Action Tracker estimates that if all governments meet their Paris Agreement commitments, global warming will likely reach 3.0°C, which is double the agreed 1.5°C limit. Real-world policy projections are slightly higher at 3.3°C.
• Among the 32 countries monitored by the Climate Action Tracker, no government has increased its Paris Agreement commitment, resulting in almost no change to country ratings. All countries are expected to update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2020.
• Climate action results in 2018 were mixed: Norway and Costa Rica progressed in renewable energy and transport decarbonisation, while China saw a second consecutive year of increased coal use and Brazil appeared to move away from forest protection policies. Conversely, Chile, India, and South Africa introduced or reinforced energy strategies aimed at decarbonisation or shifting away from coal.
