Wie ausbleibender Klimaschutz im Verkehr künftige Generationen belastet

A case study by the NewClimate Institute, commissioned by Greenpeace e.V. and Germanwatch e.V., analyzing the impact of delayed climate action in Germany's transport sector on future generations and the feasibility of achieving climate neutrality by 2045 or 2050.

• Germany and its transport sector are failing to meet climate protection goals, with national measures being insufficient to align with the Paris Agreement. The Ministry of Transport has consistently missed sector targets established by the Climate Protection Act and has failed to implement significant measures to prevent these failures.
• Delaying emissions reductions in the transport sector leads to more disruptive and severe measures in the future to reach the 2045 or 2050 climate neutrality targets. A scenario where action begins in 2030 ("Compensation for delayed action") results in significantly higher rates of emission reduction after 2030 compared to scenarios starting in 2021 ("Missed opportunity") or 2024 ("Immediate action"), creating greater hardship.
• Compensating for the transport sector's lack of action through other sectors is mathematically possible but unrealistic. Because sectors like agriculture and parts of industry are harder to decarbonize, using them to offset transport failures would cause the cost per avoided tonne of CO2 to rise disproportionately.
