Aligning Agribusiness and the Broader Food System with the Paris Agreement

The NewClimate Institute proposes a four-tier rating system for agribusinesses to guide development finance toward activities consistent with the Paris Agreement's mitigation goals, focusing on deforestation, carbon sinks, and sustainable farming practices.

• To align the food system with Paris Agreement mitigation goals, the NewClimate Institute proposes a rating system for agribusinesses divided into four categories to guide investment decisions: 'misaligned', 'mostly misaligned', 'partially misaligned', and 'aligned'.
• The proposed rating categories define specific investment criteria: 'misaligned' businesses include those driving deforestation or converting peatland and coastal wetland ecosystems, or those dependent on air freight exports; 'mostly misaligned' businesses are excluded from working capital but may receive project finance to shift activities; 'partially misaligned' businesses are eligible for conditional working capital to move toward best practice; and 'aligned' businesses are deforestation-free and follow best practices in irrigation, fertiliser application, soil carbon conservation, and manure management.
• Agribusinesses are specifically identified as 'aligned' if they specialize in plant-based protein foods as alternatives to meat and dairy, or if their practices enhance carbon sinks, such as through agroforestry.
