State of Climate Action 2021

The State of Climate Action 2021 report evaluates 40 indicators across key economic sectors to determine the progress toward a zero-carbon world by 2030 and 2050, finding that none of these indicators are currently on track to meet 2030 targets.

• The report assesses 40 indicators across sectors including power generation, buildings, industry, transport, land use, and agriculture to determine the work remaining by 2030 and 2050 to achieve a zero-carbon world. It also examines necessary shifts in leadership, social norms, innovations, institutions, and supportive policies.
• While there has been exponential growth in electric vehicle sales since 2015 and in wind and solar power over the last twenty years, none of the 40 indicators analyzed in the report are on track to meet 2030 targets.
• To align with a 1.5 degrees Celsius warming limit, specific accelerations are required: unabated coal electricity generation must be phased out five times faster than current trends, annual gross tree cover gain must increase three times faster, and crop productivity must be boosted nearly two times faster.
